Common Sense Book Review

Common Sense - Martin Parr, Dewi Lewis , 1999.

This book was published by Dewi Lewis, it includes a variety of images taken by Martin Parr based on everyday life. The photographs are not named, they don't have any information and none of the people in the photographs are identified. Every photo is different, there is no consistent theme throughout the book.

The book gives us a taste of Martin's life, his culture, his interests and most of all, his personality. It almost takes us back in time to what the American 90's society was like, you can see that in his images, he's capturing key moments of everyday life. It is almost like he wants to capture memories. I think that there is a story behind each one of Martin's photographs, although we are not given any information.

There is no introduction to the book, the only information we are given is the name of the book and the photographer. Each page is a photograph is personal to Martin, this gives the reader a sense of admiration towards him for sharing his life through images.

Personally I feel that after reading through this book, it's helped me connect with Martin and his way of life. Also it's made me realize how different each culture is, by seeing their everyday life in photographs. I see Martin as an inspirational photographer, especially for a topic such as society or culture.

These photos were taken in my second studio lesson, i used an empty lantern to create the elements of shadow and form.

I also I added a bundle of fairy lights to the lantern to add effect, texture and form.

I took a photo of the fairy lights from a vertical angle, it created a unique shadow.
