Book Review - Self Portrait Photographs By Lee Friedlander
Harvard Reference; John Szarkowski
1970. Lee Friedlander - Self Portrait.
Self Portrait by Lee Friedlander is a
series of photographs taken over a time span of six years. The photographer
appears in almost every photo, taking a self portrait. The book can be
inspirational to people trying to capture elements of self portrait, such as
mirror reflections, glass reflections or shadows. Each photograph was taken in
black and white, this is mainly because of the decade in which each photo was
captured. I think that having the images in black and white adds a unique feel
to each of Lee’s photographs. I chose to analyse this book because my theme for
my assignment is reflections, this book has helped give me some ideas as to
what images to take.
In some of the photographs you can see
the culture and time in which it was taken because of certain surroundings,
such as how old fashioned everything is, what clothes are worn, and what cars
are being driven. I think that this book is like a time capsule, it gives you a
taste of what it’s like to live throughout that decade.
Photo Analysis;
Buffalo, New York 1968- I have chosen this as one of my
images to analyse because I think that it captures a clear theme of reflection,
which is something I am focusing on for my own personal assignment. As you can
see, the photographer (Lee Friedlander) is taking a self-portrait in what looks
like a bathroom mirror. There is a bulb to the left of the image which is the
light source of capture. Overall I like this image; it works well because of
the contrast between light and dark. I also find it quite inspiring.
Wilmington, Delaware 1965- I have chosen this image because I
think that it is really interesting. As you can see, this portrait is quite
different to the last. It is a self-portrait in a shop window. There is a door
inside the shop which has a square glass window; this creates smaller
reflection of the photographer in the photo. I think that the focus point is in
the centre, where the photographer is stood. This image itself is really
inspiring for me because it is a unique interpretation of the theme of
reflection. There is also a small element of shadow in the reflection because
it is captured in black and white. Overall I like this image.
